Race over Bonneville Speed Week
Incomparable to any other racing venue around the globe, the storied Bonneville Salt Flats is home to all kinds of speed-shattering records, vintage cars shows and other curiosities. Don’t miss a trip to Wendover to witness a car shatter the sound barrier at the Bonneville Salt Flats races. The Bonneville Salt Flats is an area of natural beauty that stretches 12 miles long and five miles wide. This fragile resource administered by the Bureau of Land Management, of white salt-crusted terrain on the edge of the Great Salt Lake basin, can be found along the I-80 near Utah / Nevada borderline, less than 10 miles from Wendover city. Cars race on the smooth, level surface that is ideal for achieving high speeds. In addition, the environment of the salt flats provides an unforgettable landscape rarely seen.
After the races are over, be sure to stop by the Wendover Nugget that hosts nightly vintage and classic cars in the east parking lot. Enjoy a cold beverage, live music and walk amongst hundreds of classic cars and trucks all restored to their glory days. Truly a sight to behold.
Have an Adventure and Check out the Ruby Mountains
Who knew that Elko Nevada, is home to one of the most beautiful mountain rages in North America? All roads lead somewhere amazing out here, but the arguable centerpiece of the Elko region is the glacier-carved range known as the Ruby Mountains, accessed via Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway. Adorned with alpine peaks, lakes, and flowing streams, tree-lined canyons, and horizon-chasing, high-desert valleys, Elko County is vast and varied and arguably the stunning centerpiece of Nevada.
So, where is Elko, Nevada? Sitting slightly above 5,000 feet, this thriving Nevada city is less than a three-hour drive from downtown Salt Lake City. Elko is a confluence of old Cowboy and Western cultures. With so much to explore around here, there’s no shortage of things to do or outdoor activities to enjoy. In town, head for cultural institutions that anchor Nevada’s artistic heritage, check out some of Nevada’s most iconic restaurants, explore dozens of murals and free public art, or hit up one of our classic sagebrush saloons, which offer a different kind of perspective on the old West.
While in town, stay where the cowboys and old-timers call home; the recently remodeled Maverick Casino and Hotel. Enjoy spotless rooms, a great pool, Aspens Steakhouse and many of the other amenities that are sure to make your weekend getaway as much fun as you can imagine.
