LDS Church ‘mobilizing its resources’ to help victims as L.A. fires continue to rage

Leader says the Utah-based faith is “committed to helping during this emergency and throughout the aftermath.”

With flames still galloping through Los Angeles area neighborhoods, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint assured those affected that it is “committed” to supporting what is sure to be a long and difficult recovery.

“Our hearts go out to all affected by the fires that continue to cause destruction in Southern California,” Mark A. Bragg, president of the faith’s North America West Area, said in a news release. “...At this time, the church is mobilizing its resources.”

Stressing his own “deep roots” to the region, Bragg added:

“Our prayers are with those who have lost their homes and are displaced and for the first responders. We mourn with those who have experienced loss and ask for the Savior’s comforting spirit to be with them. We also express gratitude for the acts of faith and work sustaining those affected by this crisis.”

The general authority Seventy was born in Los Angeles, attended UCLA and married his wife, Yvonne, in the faith’s Los Angeles Temple, according to a brief biography on the church’s website. He also launched his career as vice president of an L.A. bank.

The Utah-based church, Bragg said, is “committed to helping during this emergency and throughout the aftermath.”

He encouraged all to join the effort to “assist those in need.”

The release did not offer specifics nor did it detail any damage to church buildings.
