Funeral services for M. Russell Ballard, the senior apostle in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who died Sunday at 95, will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to noon MST in the Tabernacle on Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City.
The funeral will be open to the public ages 8 and older, according to a Tuesday news release, and will be streamed live on the church’s Broadcasts page and Inspiration and Events YouTube channel.
A private burial service will take place at the historic Salt Lake City Cemetery after the funeral.
There will be no public viewing, but expressions of sympathy can be posted on Ballard’s official Facebook and Instagram accounts.
In lieu of flowers, the apostle’s family has asked that donations be made to This Is the Place Heritage Park.
In 2021, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox honored Ballard for his longtime support of the park, which salutes the state’s Latter-day Saint settlers.
The governor also pointed out the church leader’s push to “share the story of the sovereign tribal nations” at the park, especially “the creation of a Native American village there,” along with Ballard’s help in bringing about the “Walk of Pioneer Faiths,” which lauds the contributions of members of the “Catholic, Jewish, Congregational, Episcopal, Lutheran, Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist and Greek Orthodox faiths.”
