Letter: Let us pray that we can make America proud again

I love our country, but I fear that the shared ideals that unite us are being threatened.

We are no longer sure of who we are as Americans, and we have begun to doubt the values we held dear. Our economic system privileges some of us while crushing others. We are surrounded by the constant repetition of lies and misrepresentations; while the White House treats the rule of law as an impediment to be ignored, dismisses science and denigrates higher education.

Uncertainty makes us fearful about our jobs, our access to healthcare, the affordability of housing, the cost of living. Our falling birth rate reflects our concerns about raising children in this environment.

Our role as a world leader is in jeopardy. We no longer know which countries we regard as friends, which are our allies and which are our enemies. We are stuck in a geopolitical trap in the Middle East with no path forward. We can only hope that this conflict doesn’t become a never ending war, forever bleeding us of our resources.

Let us pray that we can make America proud again.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
