The signs of authoritarianism in our country are piling up, but there are three simple questions we can use to help. We just need to ask ourselves and each other — and, especially, our leaders — these three questions over and over, with as much heart as we can muster.

1. To whom specifically are you willing to extend the Golden Rule?

2. Are you honestly holding your team to the same standard as the other team?

3. If power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, then how can we avoid the concentration of power and offset its danger?
