(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) State officials announce the formation of the organizing committee for the 2034 Olympics during a news conference at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City on Friday, Feb. 14, 2025.

The successful bid to host the 2034 Winter Olympics in Utah brings excitement to not only the city, but the country, but we must ensure that its long-term economic, environmental, and social impacts benefit all residents.

The 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics were widely praised for financial success and infrastructure improvements. However, we’ve seen past host cities struggle with post-Olympic burdens, from overspending to environmental degradation. We must learn from these lessons.

The rush of visitors and construction could strain Utah’s resources, drive up housing costs even more, and disrupt local communities. To avoid the negative effects that previous host cities have experienced, Utah needs to have sustainable Olympic planning. It’s important for Utah to prioritize affordable housing solutions for its citizens to prevent displacement, ensure transparent spending for the Games to avoid taxpayer debt, and practice eco-friendly infrastructure in order to minimize environmental harm.

The 2034 Olympics should leave a lasting positive impact on all Utahns, not just the developers and corporations. State leaders and the Olympic organizing committee need to commit to sustainability, financial accountability, and eco-friendly development. The world will be watching, so let’s make sure that Utah delivers an Olympics that everyone can enjoy.
