I wonder if Gov. Cox is a lousy husband. He wouldn’t be the first politician to mistreat his wife. His excuse for his poor decisions regarding the education system is often, “My wife was a teacher.” If he treats her like he treats educators, his marriage is as troubled as J.F.K.’s.
Cox and the Utah Legislature clearly show no respect for public servants. This is evident with HB267, which undermines unions. By actively signing the bill instead of allowing it to sit for ten days, he sends a message that teachers, police officers and firefighters are beneath him.
As a teacher, I’m continually shocked by the lack of judgment regarding education. While I’m not in the union, I recognize they represent teachers better than any politician. I challenge any senator to be a substitute teacher in low socioeconomic schools for two weeks — split it between middle, high and elementary schools. Experience firsthand the issues you ignore. Shadow a police officer or firefighter to understand what public servants endure before treating them poorly.
It’s absurd that after signing the bill, Cox announces a $1,400 raise for teachers. It’s like someone stealing your wallet and giving you a movie coupon.
Meanwhile, $40 million is allocated for parents choosing to homeschool. This elitist mentality is unacceptable. Many children can’t be homeschooled because their parents work. Why take away from public schools to give more to those who need it less? By undervaluing teachers, you push them out of the profession, depriving Utah’s children of the education they deserve.
To the constituents: Vote these people out. Let’s kick them to the curb, along with our governor. Utah’s children and public servants deserve better. Our state deserves a future where children are educated by teachers who want to teach.
