The behavior displayed during President Trump’s speech to Congress was disappointing and unbefitting of such a significant occasion. What should have been a serious address before the nation’s highest elected officials instead resembled a disorderly spectacle.
For the majority party, is it truly necessary to applaud and cheer at nearly every statement the president makes? The election outcome is understood but conducting yourselves with decorum and attentively listening — rather than engaging in excessive theatrics — would better serve the dignity of the event. This was a formal speech, not a campaign rally.
As for the minority party, when did it become acceptable to audibly and visually heckle the president during an official address? While disagreement is natural in a democratic system, the office of the president should be afforded the respect it deserves. If some members cannot conduct themselves professionally, perhaps they should reconsider attending. As voters, we should demand higher standards of conduct from our elected representatives. Civil discourse and professionalism should be the expectation, not the exception.
