Open letter to Sens. Curtis and Lee:
I recently sent the same letter to both of you, expressing my views on a subject. I received no response from Sen. Lee, and the response from Sen. Curtis brought only dismay.
In his response, he said, “My role in the Senate’s process is to ensure the President has a Cabinet that will help him succeed.” It is what he did not say that calls for concern.
You did not say that your job is to uphold the Constitution, or to represent the wishes of your Utah constituency. Instead, you said your job is to please the president.
I beg you to remember the oath of office you recently took. “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States.”
Your job is not to help the president succeed or to make him happy. It is not to represent the wishes of the Republican Party. You were elected to support, protect and defend the Constitution, and to represent the people of Utah. So why haven’t you spoken up as President Trump and Elon Musk have made a mockery of the checks and balances system of our Constitution and republic?
It is frustrating and disheartening to see you both subvert to the will of a president who cannot be trusted to do research, learn or share real facts and figures, who appears to only care about what he tells himself is true, and not how his choices and rulings affect the American people. He does not care about you, Utah, or me. He cares only for his personal infamy.
Please remember your duty is to the Constitution and Utah, and not to a political party, or to the president.
