Letter: To ease Republican lawmakers’ conscience about their fealty to Trump, a new oath is in order

Following is the oath that all members of Congress have been required to take since the 1860s:

“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”

In light of the behavior of Republicans in Congress, I propose that they instead take the following oath:

“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend Donald John Trump against all real and perceived enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will faithfully vote for all his nominees, no matter how unqualified or criminal; that I will endeavor to excuse all his erratic behaviors; and that I will turn a blind eye to all high crimes and misdemeanors that he may commit while in or out of office, the Constitution of the United States be damned. So help me Donald.”

Surely this would ease the conscience of most Republicans in Congress (if any of them still have a conscience, or ever did).
