How disappointing to read that Utah’s Legislature (SB102) is attempting to ban dual-language immersion, mental health support, accelerated learning, etc., in public schools. My granddaughter has benefited from their dual-language program for four years.
And I reflect on my personal experience with the Legislature in my decades in Utah.
In 2011 and 2021 they seriously gerrymandered boundaries, essentially picking their voters.
These legislators have been lovestruck with the idea of mining till the air is polluted; drilling till roadways are consumed by oil tankers; hungering to steal the authority of cities (below) and federal government (above); drooling over Utah’s federal land (the people’s land) to scar and scrape; and shutting individuals out of democracy by making them pay millions for citizen’s initiative advertising.
These politicians are now banning books, eliminating general education and budgets. Going after children in school ... sickening. This regressive, backwards movement makes these politicians giddy. I’ve seen it.
And I ask: Where is the LDS Church leadership on this? Quiet.
Dual-language immersion? Why not? Are you so threatened by our children and grandchildren learning multiple languages? My grandparents were LDS and served their missions in Mexico. What a benefit to know multi-languages. My grandparents were so generous and kind, and made life-long friendships amongst those they converted to their church. Where is this benevolence with LDS leaders now?
Quiet.
The LDS Church leadership spoke up recently regarding inaccuracies and twisted representations of its history in the movie “American Primeval.” But if the tale is not representative of the LDS Church’s and its members’ compassion, where in the world is this compassion?
Following President Donald Trump lock-step, Utah legislators will eventually arrive at a most unethical place in humanity’s history. They have sold their souls for personal aggrandizement. Where is any humility? Where is any decency?
Quiet.
