Teachers in our state have been denigrated and vilified enough. My wife teaches kindergarten, and every day, she faces undue criticism and disrespect from some parents and members of the community while simply trying to help children learn to read.
Her union provides critical professional and emotional support, which is essential in a field that is increasingly challenging. If teachers lose the ability to collectively bargain, who will advocate for them? Collective bargaining ensures fair working conditions, adequate resources, and a voice for those dedicated to educating our children.
Restricting teachers’ collective bargaining rights, as proposed in HB267, is a direct attack on the profession. It also risks harming students. States that have enacted similar restrictions consistently rank among the lowest in ACT and SAT scores, highlighting the negative impact these policies have on education quality.
Teaching is a noble profession that deserves our support, not additional obstacles. A vote for HB267 is a vote against teachers, education and our children’s future. I urge our legislators to reject this harmful bill and to work toward policies that empower teachers to succeed.
