Letter: Don’t overlook this (perhaps lesser-known) higher education gem in northern Utah

I’d like to call attention to an excellent but somewhat unrecognized asset to Utah’s higher education. I am a Coloradan — having received all my formal education from kindergarten through college graduation from Colorado schools. I came to Utah for employment and stayed after retirement. I now consider myself a Utahn.

A neighbor introduced me to the Lifetime Learner program at Weber State and I was enthralled. My college degree is in the biological sciences so I took up the social sciences with classes in history, geography, and sociology, etc; all subjects I had no time for in my undergraduate years.

My point in writing is to recognize the quality of the education and teaching at WSU — especially in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (CSBS). I obviously don’t know every professor on campus or even all in the CSBS. But the ones I do know, have studied with, and even become friends with are exceptional.

Lifetime Learners pay minimal tuition and earn no credit, yet the teachers are willing to engage with us as well as those students preparing for their careers. The association and experience we all gain is priceless! I would urge potential degree-seeking students to consider the quality and commitment of the faculty and support staff that, in my experience at WSU, is outstanding. They are invested in the success of their students and willing to go out of their way to help. They do not compromise the requirements for their classes but they care about their students!

Don’t overlook this perhaps lesser known gem in northern Utah!
