Letter: Thanks for declaring the Utah Supreme Court justices Utahns of the Year. They saved us.

Hooray for The Salt Lake Tribune declaring the justices of the Utah Supreme Court as Utahns of the Year! They have saved us — the great unwashed (in the Legislature’s opinion) — over and over again from the clutches of the most power-hungry, self-serving lawmakers we have ever inherited. (Did we actually vote for these yahoos?)

As I remember from many years ago in school, we have the three branches of government — judicial, executive and legislative. Each is supposed to be equal with the other and each is supposed to keep the other in check and not let the other run amok.

Out of these three branches, where are we (the voters, the constituents, the citizens)? We are the ones who are supposed to be having our rights safe-guarded, defended, protected — listened to — by these great three.

And that is what our Utah Supreme Court has done many times over, protected and defended us — the beautician, the garbage collector, the retiree, the single working mom, the waitress, the factory operator. They have protected those of us who don’t have the big bucks and are not capable of garnering the attention of the Legislature like the Gail Millers, the Ryan Smiths, the oil and coal companies, etc., etc.

So thank you to our Utah Supreme Court and to the Salt Lake Tribune. This is an honor which is duly observed and for which we, the mere constituents of the state of Utah, are thankful.

Karen Post, Sandy
