Letter: I was a Republican for 45 years and I know what the GOP used to represent. Now, anything goes.

Recently in the local newspaper, an article by Gavin Roberts, chair of the Economics Department at Weber State University, includes a dire warning: “Messengers who lose credibility can cause great harm.” (“Reign of Wolves,” Ogden Standard Examiner)

In the Aesop fable, “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” innocent sheep are killed by the wolves when the townspeople ignore the real crisis because of the boy’s previous lying.

Roberts points out that today in our society, wolves “feed off misinformation, fear, corruption, and opportunism … [as public trust in the media erodes] demagogues from across the political spectrum exploit the resulting gaps to gain influence [and innocent sheep get eaten!]”

Since the Trump Party has whole-heartedly embraced lying, disinformation and vulgarity, lowlife politicians now gladly assume the role of the wolves in the story. A glaring example is the president-elect’s first candidate for attorney general, a lowlife who engaged in sexual behaviors that in the past, would have ended his political career long ago — and everyone knows it! Thankfully, he withdrew.

The wolves in the Trump Party are excited, waiting in the wings ready to pillage and burn whatever gets in their way. Since being a convicted felon or judged guilty of adultery, rape, defamation, fraud and cheating is now acceptable, people lacking integrity, propriety or qualifications are fair game.

No one in the GOP dares even protest.

Witness the Republicans on the Ethics Committee blocking the release of their own report! Trump loyalty is now the only job requirement.

The Republican Party became the Trump Party when it expelled people of character and honesty like Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney.

Because I was a Republican for 45 years, I know what the GOP used to represent. Today in the Trump Party, literally anything goes. Heaven help the sheep!
