Letter: Do Cox and Owens believe that those who have been assassinated — for example, Abraham Lincoln and Joseph Smith — were unworthy of divine protection?

Gov. Spencer Cox recently gave Americans a new reason to support Donald Trump, saying God “miraculously spared” the former president’s life. Indeed, Cox was so moved that the ex-president received only a minor ear wound on July 13 that he reversed himself and finally endorsed Trump.

Rep. Burgess Owens shared similar sentiments after a second assassination attempt. Owens declared that “Heavenly Father has once again protected the Leader of a Free America …”

How grateful we should be that world leaders in the Hitler era didn’t share the Cox-Owens’ perspective on assassination attempts. The Fuhrer was the target of numerous assassination plots and attempts — all of which failed. In other words, if avoiding assassination is a true measure of divine approbation, Brother Hitler would have been widely venerated as a holy man.

Alas, we are forced to wonder if Cox and Owens believe that those who have been assassinated — for example, Abraham Lincoln and Joseph Smith — were unworthy of divine protection.

There’s a much better way to discern divine favor. We could simply inquire whether a candidate’s behavior pleases — or offends — the Almighty. In that regard, Trump is a pathological liar lacking in character who views the peaceful transfer of power as optional, is a rapist and defamer, and is a convicted felon who patronizes and bribes prostitutes. Many who once worked closely with him now see him as petty, vindictive, incompetent and entirely unfit for high office.

Therefore, we must conclude that Trump and his wounded ear deserve no support at the ballot box. If Cox and Owens continue to back such an unfit candidate, here’s a great reason why we shouldn’t vote for any of them: God is watching.
