Letter: A street connecting five schools in Rose Park is in dangerous direpair. And calls for help are getting nowhere.

The residents in Rose Park have been sounding the alarm over a section of a street to five schools. The south side lane of 1000 North between 1400 West and 1100 West is so covered with tar, it shines so bright you need sunglasses.

It also has at least 20 major potholes, plus chunks missing. There are three elementary schools — Newman, Guadelupe, Rose Park — as well as the Science Center and Head Start that come off that one section. We have been asking for this section to be cut out and repaved.

We were told after the beautification of 600 North, another two years. We were then told the bond money for major street repairs has been allotted already. Only side street repavings will be done until after a new bond is passed. Which isn’t on the ballot this year.

So we have been pleading with the city since last year to patch this area to get us through this winter. Overlaying it temporarily to just fill the potholes. We have asked for help from the council and the mayor. No one responds.

Where else are there five schools in such a short section anywhere in the city or county or even the state? We know the west side is left out of many timely improvements, but these are school children on slick winter roads.

Can you see the concern? We just want it fixed before winter. Alejandro Puy said he would look into it. We have not heard from Victoria Petro or the mayor.

They push it to the streets department.
