Letter: Why was my dog treated better than women in our country?

Our family has always had pets and we love them. Unfortunately, my female dog was “put in a family way” by a stray dog. This was not what we were expecting, but puppies are a blessing, so we were excited.

Sadly, she miscarried, but had one remaining puppy fetus so our vet had to surgically remove the remainder of the pregnancy so she wouldn’t get an infection and potentially die. A very sad outcome, because we wanted the puppies.

My question is, why was my dog treated better than women in our country? The trend in red states of forcing women who miscarry to become deathly ill with sepsis (a systemic blood infection) before doctors

feel safe to treat and remove the dead fetus, sometimes permanently damaging their reproductive organs, and causing excessive mental anguish and cost, all for control. The argument that this doesn’t happen is a lie. Physicians are medical professionals who should be allowed to take care of women’s health in the moment to do what is best for the woman, every time.

Happily, my dog is fine, but I worry about my daughter’s future.
