Letter: My vote is for a safe and healthy climate for our families

As the impacts of climate-driven wildfires, drying up of lakes causing toxic dust storms and carbon polluted air become more evident, voting emerges as a crucial solution to these problems. In Salt Lake City, where nature is a cherished part of our community, the need to prioritize climate in elections is critical. While many recognize the importance of environmental issues, these often rank lower than economic or health care concerns at the polls. This underscores the need for greater awareness of how climate policies affect all aspects of life, including public health, economic stability and social equity.

Informed voting on climate is not just an option, it’s a civic duty. Ask the candidates some questions:

  1. What will be the first steps you take to protect the environment and work to stabilize our climate?

  2. How will you work to improve the water, air and health in communities located near polluting sites such as coal plants, oil refineries or chemical plants?

  3. How will you hold corporations that pollute our air and water accountable?

We have seen that Utah is “leading by example, showcasing what a renewable energy future can look like ... with the largest solar energy initiative Salt Lake City has ever been a part of.” (Mayor Mendenhall)

Let’s continue to lead by prioritizing the climate at the polls! Consider taking the climate pledge. It’s more than a promise — it’s a commitment to educate, engage and empower yourself and others.
