Letter: A brief history of U.S. actions since 9/11 points to why we should be horrified at the present moment

Since social media has played havoc with human memory, I’d like to remind people of what they are missing in the wake of 9/11.

Bush II (Republican) invaded Iraq in 2002 using knowingly faked information, this drew our forces away from the hunt for Osama bin Laden, our mission in Afghanistan, drawing out this war into the longest in U.S. history. OBL was eventually killed by Barack Obama (Democrat).

Over the twenty years the U.S. government spent about $5 trillion on these efforts, and the wars led to the deaths of over 7,000 U.S. military personnel, 8,000 U.S. contractors and a couple million people just standing in the wrong place. Additionally an estimated 30,000 vets have died from suicide related to these missions.

Afghanistan was chaotic during our draw down, the Taliban was routing; maybe Biden could have done better correcting the largely Republican fubar, but when one is determined enough to kill by blowing themselves to smithereens, tough to say. I mean no disrespect to those that died on the final days there and, indeed, they are heroes for getting us out of there before many more American lives were lost.

Now back to now. It appears to almost everyone who hasn’t drank the Kool-Aid that Gov. Spencer Cox has decided to court Donald Trump for some reason other than their alignment on almost all aspects of morality. By supporting Trump, Cox is supporting lies about the elections of 2020, a sexual predator, convicted felon, a man who praises killers like Vladimir Putin. A guy that set loose a mob on our Capitol that wanted to hang the vice president. We the people should be horrified.

Christopher Pond, Sandy
