Letter: There’s a reason why we have overcrowded trails on the east side: The effort to build new ones was canceled.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Mike Coleman of Millcreek takes in the view of the Salt Lake Valley during a ride on the Parley's Pointe Trail on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2022. The 4.8-mile trail is part of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and winds between the Parley's Trail bike path and the Arcadia trailhead on Lakeline Drive.

Recently, The Salt Lake Tribune ran a nice article about trail building in the southwest quadrant of the valley. The article made note of the crowded trails on the east side of the valley and offered the new trails as a way to get away from trail congestion.

We wouldn’t have overcrowded trails on the east side if the mayor, the city council and The Tribune hadn’t bought into the (mostly) false innuendo of Save Our Foothills and canceled the trail building that had been years in the planning and received overwhelming support during the public hearings. So now two years later, after yet another study, I still have to add to traffic congestion and valley pollution to drive across the valley to recreate on trails. Thanks Mayor Mendenhall. Thanks Salt Lake City Council.
