Letter: It is time to recognize Trump’s play as a tragedy and bring down the curtain

(Julia Nikhinson | AP) A demonstrator reacts to the guilty verdict announced against former President Donald Trump outside Manhattan Criminal Court, Thursday, May 30, 2024, in New York. Donald Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes as a New York jury found him guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to a porn actor who said the two had sex.

Recent developments have cast Donald Trump in an entirely new light. Never before has a convicted felon run for the office of president of the United States. No one could have dreamed this up as a work of fiction. But, not only has Trump created this story; he has been the performing artist.

Trump has become a parody of someone who is campaigning to be president. If you study his comments, everything he says is hilarious. The public and the media have been too caught up in the drama and chaos to appreciate the humor in it.

Having lost their moral compass, the Republican leaders with the temerity to defend Trump are contributing to this political charade. Trump has made his entire campaign and the Republican Party a laughing stock.

While it may be amusing to chuckle at Trump’s sideshow, the future of our democracy may be in the balance. It is time to recognize Trump’s play as a tragedy and bring down the curtain.
