Letter: Fight to preserve Sugar House was lost many years ago, ushering in residential and commercial sameness

I’ve been a Sugar House resident for decades and I appreciate the preservation-minded people and their battle to keep the high rises out.

Sadly, the fight to prevent the suburbanization of Sugar House was lost many years ago. Sugar House is pretty much indistinguishable from South Jordan or Lehi or any other generic Utah suburb.

Driving into Sugar House now is truly entering the belly of the beast. Once there and parked, which isn’t easy, you have your choice of residential and commercial sameness. It’s really sad for us long-time residents as the potential for something really unique was there. It’s gone now.

Our prior city leaders caved to the almighty property tax dollar twenty or more years ago and most council members and mayors since then just rode the wave.
