Letter: To avoid chaos, must Trump be above the law?

We are probably in for a chaotic year. So let’s face this reality and just do what is right, both legally and politically, instead of fruitlessly trying to avoid the turmoil of this election year.

I am hearing and reading too many voices who say Donald Trump should not be prosecuted because it will cause chaos and further divide us. The truth is that as long as Trump is a participant, there will be mayhem. Apart from what happens in the legal arena, there will be tumult in the political world, whether Trump is disqualified or defeated or elected.

So forget about the disruptive consequences of trying Trump for his alleged crimes. Treat Trump like any other defendant. The legal process should not be polluted by introducing political repercussions. The law should be about accountability, not unity.

What good does it do to avoid chaos now when it’s inevitable later with Trump, whether he is elected or rejected by voters? Do not delay or avoid Trump’s legal accountability for political reasons.
