Letter: The nation needs a strong, truth-based GOP

The following words are from Liz Cheney’s remarks just prior to the Republican caucus vote that removed her from her position of leadership in the House GOP. Once again she proved she is a person of integrity and fealty to the Constitution. Sadly, what has happened since has simply proved that the Republican Party continues to love the 45th president and his lies.

“Our nation needs this Republican Party, as a strong party based on truth, so that we can shape the future. To do that we must be true to our principles and to the Constitution. We cannot let the former president drag us backwards and make us complicit in his efforts to unravel our democracy. Down that path lies our destruction and potentially the destruction of our country.

“If you want leaders who will enable and spread his destructive lies, I am not your person. You have plenty of others to choose from and that will be their legacy. But I promise you this, after today, I will be leading the fight to restore our party and our nation to conservative principles . . . and to making the Republican Party worthy once again of the mantle of Abraham Lincoln.” (From Chapter 26, The Inescapable Force of Freedom, “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning,” by Liz Cheney.)
