I have three major concerns with current actions in Congress. I wrote to my representative, Chris Stewart, several times with some specific questions about failing to raise the debt ceiling to prevent a default, his committee assignment on the House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government, and the integrity of Congress which allows George Santos to remain in the House of Representatives.
His response was less than stellar. This response is typical:
“I am focused on serving the people of Utah’s Second District with honesty and integrity. I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States — and I take that oath and my role as your Congressman seriously. I cannot speak for my colleagues, but I hope others respect this oath as I do.”
From Rep. Stewart, I wanted an explanation of why ruining our credit rating and causing anxiety to millions of Americans is worth holding the country hostage over cutting social programs. What I wanted to know is why the focus on the weaponization committee is only on Democrats rather than on structural change? What I wanted to know is why there isn’t a standard for House removal?
I received no answers.
Based on his comments, no one should ask for specifics. I would appreciate some honesty and integrity. That begins with a focus on the citizens, rather than Rep. Stewart’s feelings about himself.
