Letter: Planned exclusive resort for the mega-rich exemplifies how we throw money at Utah’s natural gifts

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Two ski lifts are now visible at Wasatch Peaks Ranch, an exclusive community and private ski resort under development outside the hamlet of Peterson on Friday, April 7, 2023. The development, catering to richest ‘1% of the 1%’ about 17 miles from Ogden, is approved for 750 residential units, will come with a Tom Fazio golf course, a village and numerous amenities, including 70 miles of trails for residents’ exclusive use.

I was deeply saddened reading about the plans for a resort on the back side of the Wasatch Range.

When I was a teen (back in the 1970s), one of the great treks was to backpack out of Layton, past Adam’s Cabin, up to the summit, back down into Morgan valley, and then across to Weber Canyon (to be picked up at the rest area.) Three days and two nights of adventure in pristine wilderness. Now it will be fenced, restricted, and “civilized” for the mega-rich.

Admittedly, few of us humans did that trek. But this area is also home to deer, mountain lion, rabbit and so much more. They will be evicted from their homes. Too often, we Utahns throw money and bulldozers at our natural gifts. We need to stop doing this. I don’t see us stopping at all.
