Letter: Two ways to make Rep. Curtis’ ‘wish’ about women’s agency come true

(Jeffrey D. Allred | Pool) Rep. John Curtis, R-Utah, speaks in 3rd Congressional District debate at KBYU Broadcasting building in Provo on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022.

Rep. John Curtis, I agree with you that “if you’re a woman, it stinks that most of these legislatures [sic] are men, most of these decisions are made by men.” It is also good of you to “wish, as a man, [that you] didn’t have to make this decision [and that you] wish women could make this decision.” I agree with your opponent, Glenn Wright, “that it would be nice”.

There are two ways to make both of our wishes come true. First, I, and hopefully every other woman in Utah’s 3rd congressional district will vote for Wright.

Unfortunately, however, those pesky Utah male legislators ignored the will of the people and drew the congressional districts to ensure Wright’s loss. Thus, the remedy will likely be up to you, Rep. Curtis.

I only have wishes — SCOTUS stripped me/all women of the right and power to control my/their reproductive health, putting it in the hands of you and other members of Congress/state legislators.

But in spite of your power to make your (and my) wish come true (“that women could make the decision”), you voted against HR3755, which would have restored Roe standards via federal law.

If your wishes are more than words, give them a horse to ride.

Robin Hough, president, Women’s Democratic Club of Utah
