Letter: Davis School District’s failures are unlikely to be remedied

The Davis School District mission statement on their website says:

“Educators, parents, and community members work together to create a successful educational experience for each student.”

Further on down the page it talks about safety and security:

“Davis School District creates an environment where physical and emotional safety are paramount.”

In many cases illustrated of late and sadly punctuated by the suicide of a young student it’s obvious they have failed in this endeavor.

Their response was to rehire the exact person in charge of Educational Equity during much of the time of the complaints investigated by the DOJ. Are they calling her back to clean up her old mess? Secondly, they respond by launching an investigation using people they refuse to name. The super-secret clique of sycophants will help carry the school spirit like the cheer squad they likely are.

Forgive my cynicism when I say that I expect exactly nothing to come of this. I expect no explanation of the past, no accountability for the present, and no direction for the future.

Excluding community, ignoring parents, and allowing unbalanced and biased performance from certain educators will never create a successful educational experience. What it will do is perpetuate the culture that created the problems in the first place, which seems to be what the district wants. Reid Newey and the school board should take a hard look at their performance as leaders. I know I will come the next election.
