Letter: Sens. Romney and Lee: Protect our democracy by passing the For the People Act

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah representatives from left, Blake Moore, Chris Stewart, Senators Mike Lee and Mitt Romney and Rep. Burgess Owens take the stage before delegates attending the Utah Republican Party’s 2021 Organizing Convention at the Maverik Center in West Valley City on Saturday, May 1, 2021, as they return to an in-person format after the pandemic forced the nominating convention to go online last year.

I urge Sens. Mitt Romney and Mike Lee to put their words of support for the U.S. Constitution into action and vote “yes” on S1: The For the People Act. There are few things that are worth defending more than the American form of government: a republic with democratically elected representatives acting under the rule of law.

However, that government has been profoundly under attack during the past five years through the actions of an immoral and criminally corrupt president. Most recently, his efforts to undermine the conduct and credibility of the 2020 election and to foment an insurrection only highlight the profound need for the reforms to our election laws and ethics codes put forward in this bill. And as if the actions of one man weren’t enough, legislatures across the country are proposing and passing a tidal wave of election “reforms” clearly designed to limit access to the ballot, especially among historically marginalized communities -- 361 by a recent count of the Brennan Center.

The threats to our democracy did not end on Nov. 3, Jan. 6 or Jan. 20. The real election fraud lies in the perpetuation of the false narratives around the conduct and outcome of the last election and ongoing efforts to restrict access to the ballot to those intent on destroying democracy itself. We the People are the only ones who can stop it. Please call your senators and voice your support for this bill: Romney (202) 224-5251 and Lee (202) 224-5444.
