Letter: The majority of delegates weren’t “displeased” with Romney

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Sen. Mitt Romney, left, speaks with outgoing Utah Republican Chairman Derek Brown before Romney took the stage during the Utah Republican Party’s 2021 Organizing Convention at the Maverik Center in West Valley City on Saturday, May 1, 2021, where he was booed by Republican delegates numbering more than 1,900.

I am a Republican state delegate and attended the Republican Party Convention on May 1.

Reports in both the Deseret News and The Salt Lake Tribune referred to the crowd as “raucous.” It was much more than raucous. It was derogatory, disrespectful, hateful and prideful.

Emilie de Azevedo Brown was quoted regarding the disrespectful “booing” that took place with several of the speakers, including Mitt Romney. Brown said, “If the point of this censure is to let Romney know we’re displeased, I promise you, he knows.”

The failure of the censure resolution shows that a majority of the state delegates apparently did not wish to “let Romney know they were displeased.” Please do not group all Republicans into your error-ridden thinking Ms. Brown. You may be the loudest and most raucous, but you do not represent us all.

What I hope Sen. Romney knows is that while some of the Republican delegates may have been displeased, many – in fact apparently a majority – are not.
