Letter: Not everyone deserves federal payments

(Eric Gay | AP photo) In this April 23 photo, President Donald Trump's name is seen on a stimulus check issued by the IRS to help combat the adverse economic effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, in San Antonio.

I 100% disagree with Thomas Michie’s letter, “$600 isn’t enough.” It is outrageous to give $2,000 per person to people who make $75,000 per year ($150,000 if married filing jointly) if they are still working.

Unemployment is no more than 10 to 15%, so at least 85% of the people getting the money are still working. Even giving $600 to those still working is outrageous. At the very least, the limit on income to receive a stimulus payment should be between $30,000 and $40,000.

The money saved by not paying those still working should go to extending and increasing unemployment benefits to those who actually lost their jobs. Some of the “extra” money could also go to the states so essential services can be maintained and state employees not furloughed. Let’s put the stimulus money where it can do real good and not use it to try to buy votes.
