How did we arrive at a point where we have a congressman, a senator and a state attorney general who, at best, are promoting actions that are destructive to democracy and not helpful to dialogue that encourages compromise and understanding? While the diversity and complex issues of Utah residents continue to expand, the interpretation of what is “good for Utah” continues to shrink.
Sen. Mitt Romney becomes a “hero” for simply stating the obvious, Sen. Mike Lee downplays democracy, Rep. Chris Stewart praises an autocrat and Attorney General Sean Reyes seeks to overthrow a fair election.
We focus on gerrymandering while our democratic institutions are directly eroded through “our” elected officials. We need to find a way for “representative” representatives to be elected and rid ourselves of those with views that are not representative of a democracy. Shortly, it appears that it will get worse. Rep.-elect Burgess Owens’ views are even less representative. It is time for an overhaul.
