Sen. Mike Lee’s extreme positions do not represent the views of most Utahns. The most recent evidence of how far outside the mainstream our senior senator lies is his single-handed blocking of a Senate measure to build Smithsonian museums honoring women and Latinos, which had otherwise unanimous support in the Senate.
Sen. Lee argued that their establishment would inflame divisions, but I think Utahns understand the value of history education as a path to greater understanding. This is simply the most recent example of Lee’s extremism. Anyone paying attention knows there are countless others. He is up for reelection in 2023, and I think the time is ripe for a moderate, popular Republican to primary him.
