Letter: You are what your vote says you are

The Nov. 6 Gordon Monson column, “Election shows too many Utahns ignore race issues,” — which should have been in the Opinion section — was the first article I recall in The Salt Lake Tribune which basically screamed: “What are you people thinking?”

I will carry some water for Mr. Monson and state the obvious, Trump is a full-on racist. Full stop. Trump thrives on racial resentment and anti-immigrant fear mongering, interspersed with his desperate pleas for American on American violence.

And 58% of Utahns voted for him.

One can weakly attempt to justify a vote cast for Trump as being based on the judiciary, or the economy, or even on religious grounds, but let’s not bury the lead: Trump is a vile racist who attempts to sow racial division and hatred of the “other” in his attempt to hold on to the presidency and 58% of Utahns were fine with it. 58%.

Who are you people?

The majority of voters in our tidy little Utah theocracy just revealed what they are to the rest of us so take this as fair warning.

Paying proper homage to Monson’s article by circling back to the sports page, I’m reminded of a quote from hall of fame football coach, Bill Parcells, which roughly states, “You are what your record says you are.” So, using that line of reasoning, you are what your vote says you are.
