Letter: Let citizens police illegal campaign signs

A June 22 Tribune article noted that it violates the law to place campaign signs on pedestrian bridges, overpasses and other public rights of way. However, a UDOT spokesman said that removing these numerous illegal signs isn’t “the best use of our time.” Consequently, the law isn’t enforced, and nearly all campaign signs remain until after the election.

Shall we law-abiding Utahns give up on enforcing our laws? Never! Here’s the perfect solution: Simply revise the law to allow any resident to remove, destroy or deface the illegal signs. It’s a win-win-win-win. It would enforce the law, wouldn’t cost a single tax dollar, would reduce visual pollution and would provide high but legal levels of satisfaction to those who destroy signs of candidates they detest.
