Letter: Too many vindictive disagreements

As we approach Memorial Day, various degrees of “lockdown” and confinement due to the coronavirus will affect how we celebrate and honor those who died to give us our freedoms.

Many would get together with family and friends and others would attend formal events. My favorite was the one at the Fort Douglas Cemetery. It is disappointing that it will not be held.

We all have our stress due to the virus, which may be what leads to something that is even more disappointing. It seems to me that the letters in the opinion section of The Salt Lake Tribune are getting more personally vindictive toward those who hold different opinions than theirs.

Last month Mr. Sharp and Mr. Haughey were criticized for their opinions. More recently, Mr. Kimball was criticized for objecting to one of Pat Bagley’s cartoons.

As we pause to thank and celebrate those military men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms, let’s not dishonor them by our actions toward others.

To disagree with someone’s opinion is quite acceptable. To be disagreeable and degrading while doing it is not acceptable.

Let us appreciate our heros and fellow citizens as we celebrate Memorial Day.

Rear Adm. J.R. Fowler, USN (ret.), Salt Lake City
