Letter: Don’t let high school end this way

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) East High school special education teacher Myra Waters gets ready to head out with one of several teams to visit each of the over 400 students of the 2020 graduating class on Thursday, May 7, 2020, as a way to celebrate them during this challenging time of the coronavirus pandemic.

As far as most of Utah virtual graduations are being held, us seniors don’t want that. We’ve already had our senior experience taken from us, our sports taken, our senior dances and, most of all, our last goodbyes.

As the smaller businesses are slowly opening up, we should be able to have our 12-plus years of hard work recognized.

In my opinion, the schools should host smaller graduations outside in their football stadiums. Instead of one large graduation, have three smaller ones. No parents, students are six feet apart and seniors get one last goodbye. Broadcast the event on a local channel, or have it live-streamed.

I understand that it would be much more difficult to have an actual graduation, but nothing is impossible. Use extra precautions, like having hand sanitizer and wearing gloves and face masks, and any person that doesn't respect the rules will be sent out.

Don't let 2020 students be left unheard. Thank you.

Taylor V. Shelton, Salt Lake City
