I’ve spent the last few years listening to my conservative acquaintances complain about those “libtard socialists” wanting to shower everyone with free stuff. Now here we are looking at the crisis of COVID-19, and out come the Republicans ready to shower free stuff on everyone.
I get that small businesses and displaced workers need help fast. What I don't get are things like payroll tax holidays, where the people who are still working are the ones who get the benefit. I don't get $1,000 for every American when, frankly, while I'm nowhere close to rich, like many comfortable retirees I don't need the extra cash.
I don't get how mega corporations that have been taking on debt at artificially low interest rates to buy back stock and prop up stock prices plus a huge tax cut need bailouts. As usual, corporate America was privatizing profit and socializing risk.
Our political leaders need to take a deep breath and quickly help those in true need and avoid the knee-jerk reaction to engineer a huge giveaway to corporate America.
