Letter: Pass the Families First Coronavirus Response Act

As a new mom with a precious 4-month-old baby daughter to care for, I see that it is imperative that our country’s leaders take aggressive preventative measures to protect American families from the pandemic infectious disease of Coronavirus.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is currently no vaccine to prevent the spread of this outbreak to others. The only best way to prevent contracting this illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus.

In addition to thorough hygiene practices such as handwashing, another preventative measure that would help immensely is for the U.S. Senate to pass the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. This bill provides free coronavirus testing for everyone who needs a test, including those who are uninsured. It also supports families by providing paid emergency leave and up to three months of paid family and medical leave.

Other positive legislative pieces in this bill are that it strengthens food security initiatives for families, including young school children and the elderly. It also increases federal funds for Medicaid so that all Americans can have access to medical treatment if necessary.

Passing the FFCRA makes perfect sense because it protects American families and is potentially saving millions of lives from being infected or lost, including our dear sweet children.
