Letter: People are dying and we are spending way too much for health care

Some days I get so angry when I read the criticisms of Medicare for all. I just wish people would look at all the facts surrounding this issue.

Sometimes it feels like “I got mine (insurance), to heck with everyone else, cut spending.” I believe in a phase-in for Medicare for all, but I truly believe that all Americans deserve to have at least a basic health care plan. Those of us more fortunate will purchase a Medicare supplement just as we do now. But at least a person with a basic plan can get their kids antibiotics, get a broken arm set, or get the medications they need to stay alive.

The cost of healthcare and prescriptions is outrageous.

We had an experience this past summer on a trip to Greece. The hotel put my husband’s insulin in the freezer instead of the refrigerator, which made it unusable. We had two more weeks on this trip and weren’t sure what to do. We finally went to a local pharmacy in Greece and explained our problem, and asked if there was anything over the counter that we could use until we got home. The pharmacist asked what my husband was using and proceeded to tell us she could sell us a 4 week supply (4 vials came in the same box), for $60.00 without a prescription. Really?

We need to wake up, we are getting taken advantage of and people are dying and we are spending way too much for health care. I hear objections from union members that they negotiated hard for that insurance. Do they realize nothing is free? Those companies deduct that insurance from your wages to evaluate what kind of pay increase to give you. It all comes out of the same pot for them.
