Letter: BYU sticks to its guns on its Honor Code

In many complaints about conservative schools acting too restrictive toward their students, few people consider the importance of the contract between student and institution. As students at BYU, individuals agree to follow and uphold the principles and statutes of the Honor Code as written by the LDS Christian Church Educational System (CES). While I understand the confusion surrounding the recent “update” and “change of language” to the Honor Code for all CES schools, the spirit of the Honor Code was never altered or reversed. Those who have decided to attend BYU promise to uphold the Honor Code in exchange for the many opportunities offered by the university. Every student knows their obligation and the standards they have promised to live while attending the university.

Just as every individual has the choice to attend another educational institution that does not require the high standards set by BYU, the university has a right to set their standards however they see fit, especially when in line with the principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and most BYU students.
