Letter: Replacement plan is not fair

Imagine an alternative world for a minute. Here’s the setup. Utah has two Republican senators in Washington, but the Utah Legislature is dominated by another party, let’s say, hmmm, Democrats.

OK, now let’s say one of those Senate seats suddenly becomes vacant.

Would it be fair that the Democratic-controlled Legislature is allowed to shortlist three candidates from which, by law, the governor must select our replacement senator? Isn’t it just possible that all three of those short-listed candidates are Democrats, to replace a Republican senator?

This is absolutely possible under Grantsville Republican Rep. Merrill Nelson’s proposed HB17.

Nelson assures us he has “full confidence” the Legislature would choose the best candidates. Maybe so, but unless that possibility is removed, it could — and eventually probably would — happen.

Text your representatives to oppose HB17, at least until this unfair possibility is removed.
