Letter: Remember the Primary song about being honest

To our entire delegation of Utah congressmen, especially Reps. Chris Stewart and Rob Bishop and Sen. Mike Lee:

It seems timely to remind you of a song you probably sang in Primary. Surely your children sang it, and your own grandchildren will be singing it as well.

“I believe in being honest;

“I believe in being true,

“That honesty should start with me

“In all I say, in all I do.

“I’ll form good habits in my youth,

“To keep my word, to tell the truth,

“To speak up in defending right

“And keep my name and honor bright.

“I believe in being honest; I believe in being true,

“That honesty should start with me

“In all I say, in all I do.

— Written by Ruth Muir Gardner in 1927.

All of you know our president has committed an appalling wrongdoing by asking two foreign countries to investigate his political rival. (Reality check: How would you react if Barack Obama had done this?)

Please do not defend the indefensible or stay quiet when you should speak up for the truth. We so dearly need you all to be statesmen and put your country ahead of your own short-term political ambitions.

Please think: There will come a time when Donald Trump’s presidency is history. Do you have any doubt that many more egregious truths will come out about our 45th president? What will you tell your grandchildren?
