Letter: Things about guns that don’t make sense

Once again I hear all the old points about guns, and there’s a lot I don’t understand. Let me explain.

Regarding open carry, which is legal in Utah, I can only state that when I have seen anyone “openly” carrying, I am afraid of that individual. Is that another crazy? How do I know?

And then it seems to me that anyone carrying any gun in any situation where a “crazy” starts shooting is in immediate danger of being shot by the police or others “carrying” as they all start to “defend” others. Seems like any gun on anyone in one of those situations is more likely to end up dead than not, something I believe has already happened in one prior incident.

And then there’s guns in the home. I happen to be someone who had a couple of handguns in my home many years ago and was burglarized. So, my guns became guns for criminals. Never again.

And for those who choose a gun in the home for personal protection, I will assume there are no children in that home. If children are present, I believe that guns should be kept under lock and key. So how does that work for personal protection?

There’s also the story told to me by a nurse at a major trauma center about the woman who kept a gun under her pillow when her husband was away. She woke up just as her 2-year-old pulled the trigger, blowing away much of her face.

I don’t get it. Other countries maintain their democracies without guns everywhere, and both Australia and New Zealand have banned guns meant for use in military settings except for the military itself.

It seems to me that those gun owners have little faith in our ability to maintain our democracy.
