Letter: Mine plan threatens Kanab’s unspoiled beauty

Our southwest Utah town of Kanab has been attracting tourists with the line, “Kanab Magically Unspoiled.” Now, we are being threatened by an industrial project that will spoil our community.

The Gardner Company, well known for real estate and development along the Wasatch Front, wants to install a frack sand mine and processing factory at the gateway to our little tourist town.

They want to ruin a beautiful recreation area that has been enjoyed by generations of local families and tourists. They want to use vast quantities of our limited culinary water to wash sand. They want to drive a parade of 90,000-pound mining trucks through the heart of our business district.

Recently, more than 250 people showed up for a public hearing on the proposed frack sand mine. There were several hours of comments by local citizens and business owners, almost all of them opposing this intrusive industrial project.

It is time for the Gardner Company to live up to the mission statement located on the home page of their website, “Building Community.” Our taxpayer association would like the Gardners to invest in our community in a positive way, rather than spoiling it.

Sky Chaney is the president of the Taxpayer Association of Kane County.
