Letter: The Constitution provides the standard of impeachment

Our Electoral College method of selecting a president has failed to prevent a corrupt, or easily corruptible, individual from reaching the highest office in the United States. This selection of the president did not represent the American people as a whole.

However, the Constitution provides a peaceful and politically accountable mechanism for removing a president before the end of his term.

Reasonable people might often disagree about whether a particular president's misconduct borders on the moral gravity of betraying the United States to a foreign power or other high crimes. The Constitution prescribes a linguistic standard and the legal structure.

America's most accountable and distinguished statesman in the House and Senate would have to participate. However, they need to be reminded they are acting under the American people's watchful eyes. If they ignore evidence of gross presidential behavior and other political corruption they might well disgust the electorate who would register outrage at the next election.

The special counsel's report entitled "Report on the Investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election" should be used as a basis for articles of impeachment.
