In the Feb. 20 Tribune, a headline read “Kyle vs. Larry; 5 reasons Whitt is more popular than Krysto,” and on the sports page under large photographs of the two coaches the caption was “The people’s choice: Why is football coach Kyle Whittingham so much more popular than basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak? Ute fans cite five main reasons.”
For those who do not read beyond the captions, they must be left with the impression that these two coaches are differently regarded by Ute fans, and for good reason.
The long article that follows, written by Kurt Kragthorpe, is much more balanced than these headlines and captions suggest.
Both men are fine coaches and human beings. Indeed, Krystkowiak recently matched all donations out of his own pocket that were received in his basketball team’s fundraiser for the Huntsman Cancer Institute in remembrance of Jon Huntsman’s death one year ago.
We think the headline and caption writer was probably trying to generate reader interest in the story, but this could have been done with more positive headlines.
