As a former Salt Lake School Board member, may I suggest that the school board make sure that they have coordinated with the Salt Lake City Planning Office in regard to the future of Bennion Elementary.
It's essential that documentation be made available of the projected resident population forecast for the inner city that the city is trying to revitalize with the booming housing development occurring downtown and the resulting increase in student population.
The old Ensign Elementary School was transformed into a branch library and even Lowell Elementary School became the home to the Open Classroom School.
Additionally, perhaps it’s time to take a closer look at finding a permanent school designed for homeless students and whose parents may work in Salt Lake City helping local businesses pay property taxes, sale taxes and maybe even state income taxes.
It's also time to begin considering leasing out portions of unused school building space to nonprofit agencies that provide important services to local residents such dental, medical, social services, mental health and day care, or even a mini-branch library with the city.
