Letter: How everyone can win in the border dispute

It is less than three weeks until the next government shutdown.

Republicans want a wall. Democrats want border security and comfort for the Dreamers.

Here’s what we do: Invoke two tired cliches, which are “work together” and “reach across the aisle.”

Democrats offer $2.45 billion for border security, which amounts to surveillance, drones, more border agents and jeeps. In exchange, Republicans provide for Dreamers to be protected.

The compromise bill will fund the release of the refugee children from their cells and reunification with their parents. In return, we give the president his wall: a quarter-mile of steel slats or concrete.

President Donald Trump can go ahead and paint his name on it. “Trump Wall.” The shortened length of his wall will correlate to the size of his hands and placate his monster-truck, gun-nut base.

Everybody wins.
